Our partners at Sloan Group International have been studying resilience at work for the last twelve years using their Resilience at Work Assessment. Results show no significant difference in resilience across culture or gender, but there is a significant impact of leadership level!
The more senior you are as a leader, the more overall resilience you will have in comparison to others in your organization. The impact of that reality is that many executives assume a level of change-readiness in their teams that isn’t actually there.
Effective leadership during times of change and challenge means start where your employees are, and remember to practice empathy and “ostentatious listening”. Before you take them to a positive and proactive vision, start with acknowledging the difficulty of change and of the present moment, and build your message to ensure them that you’re not too far ahead.
